Health Care Debate
My favorite debate is health care, followed closely by education. I like these two issues because it is a valid assumption that all parties involved in the debate want the same thing- both in the short term and the long term.
In health care everybody wants the best care for the most amount of people. Buzz words that are thrown around without definition are universal, quality, and affordability.
First off lets throw the term “Universal” health care out the window. We already have Universal health care, it just isn’t good health care. Therefore, what we really want is better health care for everyone. Instead of sick pepole going to the emergency room for care the creation of opportunities for people to visit a doctor is the real issue that needs to solved.
After the term universal is gone the argument becomes clear. The only way to solve the issue of poor health care is to open up the market. Markets have a long history of dropping prices and increasing quality at the same time.
The problem that people have with believing in a health care market is a belief that people will not make the right choices. However, the studies that have been done do not show this. Also, neither do the health care markets that are already in place such as the plastic surgery and lasik which are primarily patient payer markets. In each of these markets costs have stayed the same or dropped and quality has increased, while the the rest of the health care field costs have increased faster than salaries.
People are smart. Let them make choices.
